We took a trip Labor Day weekend and ended up being extremely happy that we were patient and kept driving past until we saw the Southshore campsite.
On our site, there was a trail that led down to the "beach" of the Lake. It was 100% secluded and private. An extremely beautiful setting. We ended up camping out on the shore.
Cute campground, with a great boat dock. And clean bathrooms!
We ended up checking out a few sites and ended up in the back of the lot. There was only one other family and they were in #25 and we were in #29.
It was one if the best places to camp. Hands down.

This is the side of the Lake that you need to explore if you'd like privacy and your own space. Sure, there are camp grounds (2 separate ones) that people do know about, yet they are past the sites right off the highway that most people settle for.
First time camping at Southshore at Detroit Lake. This is a perfect family friendly campground. It's quiet at night, no rowdy crowds that keep you up all night. At least when we camped. Vault bathrooms are kept clean, camp hosts are friendly. Fire rings and picnic tables at each site. Would probably camp here again.
